On September 18, 2003, a big storm happened; the storm is called as Hurricane Isabel. This hurricane washed up 2000 foot wide and 5 m deep channel. This channel is so called as Isabel channel. As a result Hatteras Island was cut in half. The damage of this island is repaired by sand dredging. The restoration is helped and conducted by the Army Corps of Engineers.
